Got a call from a client saying they couldn’t log on to their box. Went through diagnostics, could ping router but not box etc. Client also mentioned that the lights were out on the hub. Assuming the worst we sent an engineer to the site to investigate armed with PSU, fuses etc.
On arrival the server was indeed down and investigations showed that the server received an INIT 0 at 14:30. Client has no access to server so had to be an external cause. Intruder checks carried out and nothing found.
A few minutes later the penny dropped. I had been working on their VPN via a machine in our workshop. I had forgotten to log out and left the session open. During a tidy up session in the workshop an engineer tried to shut this machine down and complained that it wasn’t shutting down. Doh!
Oh, and the no lights situation on the hub that lead us to beleive that there was a power failure?………The client was looking at the back of the hub.
Trying to decide now wether it would be easier to turn the client or the hub the right way round.
