You know the sort of user, as soon as the computers go down they start to complain and tell you how much better it was in the good old days of typewriters.
Well I was at just such a customer the other day. Major slowdown on their peer to peer windows 2000 network. Turns out they had the blaster worm. Further checking revealed that they installed McAfee antivirus 12 months ago and never even updated it from the out of the box configuration let alone any regular updates. No windows updates had been performed at all.
I explained all this need for basic maintenance and the expected downtime need to fix the problem to the client who then went off on one about typewriters etc with the line, “Oh well, we might as well go and get the typewriters out again. Give them a dust down and a quick oil and we will soon be up and running again”.
“So it’s OK to perform basic maintenance on typewriters to keep them working but not on computers then?” He quickly saw my point and allowed me to get on and do whatever was needed.
